With civil rights law firm Loevy & Loevy, UPLC filed a class action lawsuit regarding sexual abuse and beatings of prisoners by an “elite” guard unit within the IL Department of Corrections (IDOC). These guards committed clear human rights violations, including violation of the federal Prison Rape Elimination Act.

The lead plaintiff, a prisoner at Illinois River Correctional Center, seeks to represent thousands of prisoners who were subjected to these abuses at four Illinois prisons– Illinois River, Menard, Big Muddy River, and Lawrence. The suit names 232 guards who “beat, sexually humiliated, and otherwise abused [thousands of prisoners],” and “gratuitously inflicted punishment for the sole purpose of causing humiliation and needless pain.” This type of abuse has been going on far too long in Illinois’ prisons. It is time for it to stop, once and for all.
