In all my years dealing with prisoners and formerly incarcerated persons, the lack of treatment for prisoners with mental health challenges in Illinois prisons has been continuously disturbing. People often enter the prison with such challenges (like depression); serve their sentences with their condition “under the radar,” and leave prison in worse condition that when they entered. Until recently, the Illinois prison system had no measurable mental health treatment program. Now, under the leadership of the ever vigilant Uptown People’s Law Center, the problem has been put on the table and critical steps taken to solve it.
